The Daily Writer

Each page of The Daily Writer relates to a single topic and provides an exercise. Unfortunately, the book is designed to be as general as possible, and as a result it covers too wide a range of topics. The exercises ask you to work on novels, short stories, essays, poems, and other forms. While some people may like the variety, I would prefer to see two or three versions of this book that focus on fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

There are a couple ways to use the book. You can follow the title and do an exercise per day. If this helps motivate you to write regularly, then go for it. Personally, I found some of the exercises useful, and others much less so, and I tend to pick and choose the ones I want to devote time to. You could also use the book simply as a series of writing prompts to use when the creative part of your mind needs a jump start.
